About St James The Great

St James the Great is an active Church of England parish church at 92 Church Lane, Wigan, near Wrightington in Lancashire. It belongs to the Diocese of Blackburn and is protected as a Grade II listed building. The church community also supports the St James Players, an all-age theatre group that stages a play or pantomime each year in the building opposite.

Edward Graham Paley designed the church, which was constructed in 1854 and consecrated three years later. It originally seated 400 people. Rubble sandstone forms the walls, while slate covers the roof. The layout includes a four-bay nave, south aisle and porch, and a chancel. A rose window and gabled bellcote mark the west end, with lancet windows around the building. Inside are alternating circular and eight-sided piers, an exposed timber roof, and a two-manual Jardine organ dating from 1916. The churchyard contains Second World War graves belonging to a soldier and an airman.
