About Our Lady and All Saints Church

Our Lady and All Saints Church is an active Roman Catholic parish church on Lancaster Lane in Wigan, Lancashire. The parish continues to be administered by the Archdiocese of Liverpool and has remained separate from neighbouring parishes. The church has Grade II protection and is associated with a Catholic primary school bearing the same dedication.

Work on the building commenced in 1878 and concluded six years later. Hugh and Richard Ainscough, local flour merchants whose family had retained its Catholic faith through the recusant period, supplied land from the grounds of Lancaster House and largely financed the £12,000 project. Liverpool architect Edmund Kirby planned the church in the Gothic Revival tradition, including a spire intended to exceed that of the village’s Christ Church. He also created the reredos dominating the sanctuary’s eastern side. Monks from Ampleforth Abbey initially ministered here, with a choir of twenty Benedictines taking part in the 1884 consecration.
