About St Michael's Church

St Michael’s Church stands on Church Street in Preston, Lancashire. It is an active Church of England parish church and has Grade II* listed status, reflecting its architectural and historic importance.

Evidence of worship at the site dates to 684, and the foundation was among three churches in Amounderness documented in the Domesday Book. Robert Roper designed the present six-bay nave, completed in 1822, while Edmund Sharpe added the west steeple in 1843–44. The chancel was reconstructed in 1853, probably to plans by Joseph Hansom. Built of dressed sandstone beneath slate roofs, the church combines Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular Gothic styles. Its recessed octagonal spire rises to 150 feet and is supported by flying buttresses. Interior features include monuments to the Clifton family, a brass chandelier from 1725, an organ originating in 1769 and eight bells cast in 1846.
