About St Michael and All Angels Church
St Michael and All Angels Church stands on Egerton Road in Ashton-on-Ribble, Preston. It remains an active Church of England parish church within the Diocese of Blackburn and forms part of the West Preston Team benefice. The building is protected at Grade II*.
Established to serve a growing local population, the church began as a dependent chapel of St Andrew’s. Its foundation stone was placed in 1906, and the partly completed building was consecrated in 1908. The nave was finished in 1915, although the intended upper section of the tower was never constructed. Designed by Sharpe, Paley and Austin, the building combines Perpendicular Gothic forms with Arts and Crafts influences. It is built of sandstone with dressed stone details and roofs of red tile. Notable features include the carved figure of Saint Michael above the south porch, stained glass made by Harry Stammers in 1968, and a three-manual Henry Ainscough organ dating from 1934.
