About St Matthew's Church
St Matthew's Church stands on New Hall Lane in Preston, Lancashire. It remains in use as a Church of England parish church and belongs to the Preston deanery, within the Lancaster archdeaconry and Blackburn diocese.
Constructed from 1881 to 1883, the church was designed by James Hibbert, who also designed Preston’s Harris Museum. Henry Paley, of the Lancaster architectural firm Austin and Paley, carried out further work in 1932 and 1933. This project added a chapel and vestries and brought the chancel to completion, at a recorded cost of £2,637. The building is arranged with a central nave flanked by aisles on both sides. Its chancel ends in an angled apse, while the porch is designed with the form and prominence of a transept. Architectural historians have noted the building as an interesting example of Hibbert’s work.
