About St Mary's Parish Church
St Mary's Parish Church is a Church of England place of worship in Penwortham, Preston, Lancashire. It remains in active parish use within the Diocese of Blackburn and holds Grade II* listed status in recognition of its architectural and historic importance.
The chancel survives from the 14th century, while the western tower was added during the following century. Edward Graham Paley rebuilt the nave and aisles in 1855–56, raising the roof and removing galleries on the north and west sides. Built of stone beneath slate roofing, the church includes a south porch, aisled nave and a tower crowned by battlements and pinnacles. Inside are fragments of historic glass and memorials including one to John Horrocks, a cotton manufacturer and politician. Jardines of Manchester installed the west-gallery organ in 1959, and eight bells made at Whitechapel were hung in 1965. Work undertaken from 2009 to 2011 introduced underfloor heating and replaced the pews with chairs.
