About St Mary's
St Mary’s is an active Anglican parish church on Farringdon Lane in Preston, Lancashire. It forms part of the Church of England’s Diocese of Blackburn, under the Archdeaconry of Lancaster and Preston deanery. The parish shares a benefice with the Church of the Ascension in Ribbleton.
Richard Knill Freeman designed the church, which was erected from 1888 to 1891. Red sandstone forms the main structure, while yellow sandstone provides contrasting architectural details. Its design draws on Decorated Gothic traditions and features compact side aisles, asymmetrical two-bay transepts and large circular windows. The aisle roofs are screened by parapets. The Lancaster firm Austin and Paley extended the building around 1901. Further alterations by the practice took place between 1938 and 1941, when the chancel, chapel, aisles and vestries were newly constructed.
