About St Leonard the Less
St Leonard the Less is an Anglican church on Potter Lane in Samlesbury, near Preston in Lancashire, not far from the River Ribble. It serves as a working parish church in Blackburn Diocese and holds Grade I listed status.
Christian worship has taken place on the site since the 1100s, and elements of the earliest building remain. A possible reconstruction occurred during the 14th century, followed by major work commissioned by Edward Stanley, the third Earl of Derby, in 1558. Further restoration took place in 1885, while James Bertwistle added the north-western tower between 1899 and 1900. Yellow sandstone forms most of the building, alongside earlier red sandstone masonry and stone-slate roofing. Notable furnishings include enclosed pews dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, a two-storey pulpit and Thomas Southworth’s funerary armour from 1546.
