About St Leonard's Church

St Leonard’s Church is an active Church of England parish church on Church Brow in Walton-le-Dale, Preston, Lancashire. It belongs to the Diocese and Archdeaconry of Blackburn, within the Deanery of Leyland and the Province of York. The church received Grade II* listed status in 1950.

The chancel and four-stage west tower survive from the 16th century. Built of stone in the Perpendicular style, the church has slate roofs, a broad nave, paired transepts and a northern porch. The nave and transepts were reconstructed by John Pollard Seddon between 1902 and 1906, reusing local Hoghton stone and largely retaining their earlier layout because graves stood nearby. Notable details include the tower’s battlements, clocks and traceried openings, an open hammerbeam roof, and a western gallery. The chancel contains a 1634 Assheton family heraldic panel and an 18th-century brass memorial. Its stained glass includes an east window made by Hardman & Co. in 1850.
