About St John the Evangelist's Church, Clifton
St John the Evangelist’s Church, Clifton, also called Lund Parish Church, stands in a secluded position close to Clifton, near Preston in Lancashire. It remains an active Church of England parish church within Kirkham deanery, Lancaster archdeaconry and the Diocese of Blackburn.
Robert Roper designed the present church, which was constructed in 1824–25 to replace an earlier building on the same site. The chancel followed in 1852 and may have been the work of Joseph Hansom. Paley and Austin designed the western tower, completed in 1873, when the nave roof was probably renewed and Decorated-style window tracery introduced. The building has a simple aisleless nave and chancel. Its tower includes an octagonal stair turret extending above the parapet. Inside, the font is believed to be a reused Roman altar, possibly brought from a fort near Kirkham, and bears roughly carved figures. Stained glass ranges from the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries, alongside several nineteenth-century memorials.
