St John's Minster stands on Church Street in Preston and remains the town's active Church of England parish church. It belongs to the Diocese of Blackburn, while its benefice is shared with St George's in Preston. Granted minster status in 2003 following Preston's designation as a city, the church is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
Christian use of the site is documented from 1094, though the earliest structure has disappeared. The present church was erected from 1853 to 1855 after the former building was largely taken down, with the earlier tower base retained. Designed by Edwin Hugh Shellard in Decorated Gothic form, it is built from dressed sandstone and roofed with slate. A substantial western tower supports an eight-sided spire, while the interior includes timber hammerbeam ceilings, a military chapel and a 1956 Sermon on the Mount mural by Hans Feibusch. Brian Clarke created a memorial stained-glass window associated with the 1972 Preston Guild.
