About St John Baptist, Broughton

St John Baptist, Broughton is a Church of England parish church in Broughton, Preston, Lancashire. It remains in active use and belongs to the Diocese of Blackburn. Recognised for its particular historic and architectural importance, the church is protected as a Grade II* listed building.

Its west tower bears the date 1533, while Robert Roper designed the replacement nave, built from 1823 to 1826. In 1905 and 1906, Austin and Paley added the chancel, vestries and organ chamber, restored the building and replaced the enclosed pews with benches. Built of sandstone beneath slate roofing, the church combines an Early English nave with later Perpendicular-style work. Notable features include six bells cast in 1884, a brass chandelier from 1817, twentieth-century stained glass and a pipe organ made by Preston organ builder Henry Ainscough in 1906.
