About Emmanuel Church, Preston
Emmanuel Church, Preston is a Church of England congregation in Lancashire. Its Brook Street premises are protected at Grade II. Worshippers left the building in 2014 after dry rot was discovered, and it officially ceased operating as a church in February 2016. The congregation remains active, holding services and activities in the adjoining Plungington Community Centre.
Myres, Veevers and Myres designed the church, which was erected during 1869 and 1870 on land donated by Thomas Tomlinson. Sir T. G. Fermor-Hesketh, then the area’s MP, set the first stone in place in August 1868. The structure uses chiefly red brick, enlivened by other brick colours, with sandstone detailing and roofs of slate. Its Gothic design combines an aisle-free nave of five bays with a chancel, transepts and a tower at the south-west corner. Distinctive elements include beast-shaped gargoyles, pierced parapets, octagonal pinnacles, patterned tracery and a hammerbeam roof. A pipe organ installed in 1874 underwent renovation in 1912.
