About St John's
St John’s is a Roman Catholic church on Breck Road in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire. It remains in use within the Sacred Heart Deanery and the Diocese of Lancaster. Nearby, its former chapel and adjoining priest’s house are protected at Grade II.
Catholic worship continued locally after the Reformation, and Poulton’s first Catholic chapel opened in 1813 on donated land between Breck Road and Moorland Road. That rendered brick structure, rectangular in plan and roofed with slate, became too small and was superseded in 1912. Cuthbert Pugin designed the present church in a restrained Romanesque style, using rough-faced red sandstone. Its west front has buttresses, a bell opening and a statue above the doorway. Inside are aisles, modest transepts, a south-west baptistery and a western gallery with pine rails. Boulton of Cheltenham designed the altars and their decorative screens. The churchyard includes the Second World War grave of a Royal Engineers serviceman.
