About St Mary's Catholic Church
St Mary’s Catholic Church stands on Church Road in Woolton, Liverpool. It remains an active Roman Catholic parish within the Liverpool South Deanery and the Archdiocese of Liverpool. Since 2025, it has belonged to the Inland Family of Parishes in south Liverpool. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building.
Designed by Preston architect R. W. Hughes, the church was constructed in 1859–60 and opened on 28 October 1860. Originally called St Benet’s, it adopted its present dedication in 1881. Built of red sandstone beneath slate roofing, it has a five-bay aisleless nave, prominent transepts, chapels and sacristies, but no tower. Notable fittings include an 1865 high altar and reredos, probably designed by E. W. Pugin, stained glass made by Belgian artist Jean-Baptiste Capronnier in 1878, and a two-manual Franklin Lloyd pipe organ dating from 1895. Redecoration took place in 1981–82, when the font was repositioned near the front.
