About St Chad's

St Chad’s stands on Church Street in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire. It is a Church of England place of worship serving as an active parish church within the Diocese of Blackburn and Lancaster archdeaconry. Its architectural and historic importance is recognised through its Grade II* designation.

Christian worship may have taken place here before 1066, while surviving records confirm a church by 1094. The present building combines several periods: its square tower was erected in the seventeenth century, and extensive eighteenth-century work reshaped the nave while retaining parts of earlier red sandstone walls. Grey dressed stone covers the exterior, and the plan includes a chancel and a Romanesque-inspired apse. Later alterations continued across the following three centuries, with Sharpe, Paley and Austin among the architects associated with the church. Inside are enclosed pews, a pulpit from the Jacobean period, a Georgian staircase and heraldic hatchments. The tower contains eight bells, while fragments of a stone preaching cross survive outside.
