About St Wilfrids

St Wilfrids stands on Main Street in Melling, Lancashire, and remains an active Church of England parish church. It is Grade I listed and forms part of the united benefice of East Lonsdale in the Diocese of Blackburn. A planned closure in 2026 was avoided after valuable gold coins were discovered beneath the altar.

The oldest surviving parts date from about 1300, although worship may have taken place on the site from the 10th century. Much of the present sandstone building was completed late in the 15th century, with a clerestory added during work in 1763. Paley, Austin and Paley oversaw another restoration in 1891. The church has a battlemented west tower, aisles, a porch and a southern chapel. Notable details include medieval glass, an east window by Henry Holiday, memorial tablets, a Walker organ installed in 1891 and six bells recast in 1754.
