About Saint Laurence's

Saint Laurence's stands on Union Street in Chorley, Lancashire. It remains in use as a Church of England parish church within the Diocese of Blackburn. Recognised for its special architectural and historic importance, it has Grade II* protection.

Christian worship probably began on the site during the Anglo-Saxon period, when it was associated with Croston, while the earliest known written evidence dates to 1362. The surviving west tower was built in the 15th century, and the church gained independent parish status in 1793. Extensive reconstruction between 1859 and 1861 added aisles and removed the galleries, followed by further work in 1913–14 and internal reordering late in the 20th century. Built of stone beneath slate roofing, the church is chiefly Perpendicular in character. Notable details include gargoyles, battlemented parapets, historic family pews, stained glass from the 1860s and 1960s, memorials spanning several centuries, an organ dating from 1860, and eight bells cast in 1996.
