About St John the Divine
St John the Divine is situated near East Beach in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire. This Church of England place of worship continues to serve its parish and belongs to the Diocese of Blackburn. Its architectural and historic significance is recognised through Grade II* protection.
Edwin Hugh Shellard drew up the plans, and construction took place during 1848 and 1849 on a plot provided by Lytham Hall’s Clifton family. Consecration followed in September 1850. Initially associated with St Cuthbert’s as a mission, the church acquired an independent parish in 1870. Shellard also oversaw additions to the crossing arms and sanctuary area in 1856–57. The building uses finely cut sandstone and roofs of slate from Cumberland, with an Early English Gothic character. A four-level bell tower rises into a broach spire. Inside are arcades of six bays, altered box seating and glass from 1911 portraying saints of northern England. Further features include a memorial chapel refashioned around 1920, an organ with two keyboards, and six bells made in 1875.
