About St Cuthbert's
St Cuthbert’s is an Anglican parish church in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, serving the Diocese of Blackburn. It continues to function as a place of parish worship. Protected at Grade II* since 1971, it holds the second-highest level of statutory recognition for historic buildings in England.
The present building dates from 1834–35 and succeeded two earlier churches at this location, including one erected in 1770. W. H. Hobden produced the original design, while Paley and Austin extended it with a chancel in 1872 and added a northern aisle, vestry and space for the organ ten years later. Further alterations followed in 1887, 1909 and 1931. Dark crimson brick, sandstone detailing and slate roofing form its Perpendicular Gothic exterior, distinguished by battlements and a three-level tower at the western end. Inside are eight bells supported by timber framing, memorials associated with the Clifton family, and stained glass by several prominent nineteenth-century makers.
