About St Paul's Church

St Paul’s Church stands on Scotforth Road in the Lancaster suburb of Scotforth. It remains an active Church of England parish church, serving within the Diocese of Blackburn, and is protected as a Grade II listed building.

Edmund Sharpe designed the church late in his career. Its foundation stone was placed in 1874, and the completed building was consecrated in 1876. Paley, Austin and Paley enlarged it in 1890–91, adding three western bays and transepts. Local gritstone faces the brick structure, with contrasting yellow terracotta details. Sharpe combined Romanesque and Gothic features in the design, which includes aisles, a clerestory, an apsidal sanctuary and a tower above the chancel. Inside are terracotta-clad columns and arches, a pink marble font and memorial brasses commemorating Sharpe and his wife. West-end stained glass dating from about 1897 portrays the Works of Mercy.
