Lancaster Priory, formally dedicated to St Mary, is an active Church of England parish church in Lancaster, Lancashire. Standing close to Lancaster Castle, it serves the city within the Diocese of Blackburn. The church has held Grade I listed status since 1953, reflecting its exceptional historic and architectural importance.
A Benedictine community was founded here in 1094, although evidence suggests earlier Roman and Saxon activity on the site. Following its transfer to Syon Abbey in 1431, the building was extensively rebuilt in the Perpendicular Gothic style. Constructed from sandstone and roofed with slate and lead, it includes a western tower, aisled nave, chancel and several chapels. The present tower dates from 1759. Paley and Austin restored the chancel between 1868 and 1871, while later work by the practice included additional vestries, a porch and the regimental memorial chapel. Notable furnishings include fourteenth-century oak choir stalls, a seventeenth-century pulpit and font cover, stained glass designed by Edward Paley, and a pipe organ assembled from two historic instruments.
