About St. Nicholas

St. Nicholas is an active Church of England parish church on Highbury Avenue in Fleetwood, Lancashire. Standing on a triangular site, it serves the coastal town and has been Grade II listed since 2023. Its designation reflects the architectural importance of Laurence King’s distinctive design and its rarity among his buildings in northern England.

Work began in 1960, and the church was dedicated in 1962, although parts of the original scheme were never finished. It succeeded an earlier chapel destroyed by flooding in 1927 and a later temporary mission hall. Light brown brick forms the main structure, complemented by steep copper roofs and a square central tower with recessed clear-glazed panels. The building’s shape evokes an inverted ship’s hull, while the rooflines suggest sails, recalling Fleetwood’s maritime associations and St Nicholas’s connection with sailors. Inside, curved Gothic arches contrast with the angular exterior, and the centrally placed altar beneath the tower brings worshippers close to the sanctuary.
