About St John the Evangelist's Church, Kirkdale
St John the Evangelist’s Church, Kirkdale is a Roman Catholic place of worship on Fountains Road, Liverpool, Merseyside. It remains in use as a parish church, forming part of the Liverpool North pastoral area under the Archdiocese of Liverpool. Its architectural and historic significance is recognised through Grade II listing.
J. and B. Sinnott created the design for the building, which was erected in 1885. The exterior combines rugged stonework, finer masonry details and slate roofing. Its plan incorporates nave, chancel, side aisles, transepts, chapels, a western baptistry and a porch to the south-west. A small bell tower at the south-east rises to an eight-sided pointed roof. The north chapel was introduced in 1927, and the opposite transept serves as an organ gallery. Interior features include a western gallery, a curved timber ceiling, ironwork behind the sanctuary and an altar designed by Pugin & Pugin in 1898.
