About St Mark's

St Mark’s is an active Church of England parish church on Westcliffe Drive in Blackpool, Lancashire. It belongs to the Anglican Diocese of Blackburn and serves the communities of Layton, Grange Park and Little Carleton. The church also works with neighbouring Anglican parishes and other Christian denominations in the Layton area.

Construction began in 1925, following designs by the Revd E. T. Williams and architect E. E. Dennis. Built in a robust Norman-inspired style, it used red Rainhill sandstone of the type also employed at Liverpool’s Anglican cathedral. J. R. Fielding & Sons carried out the work, assisted by stonemason Tom Roberts and woodcarver J. R. Bell. Completed in 1927, the church was consecrated by Percy Herbert, Bishop of Blackburn, on 27 September that year. Interior details include carved work in the sanctuary and a pipe organ made by Ernest Walklet, inaugurated in 1934.
