About Christ Church

Christ Church is situated on Church Drive in Port Sunlight, Merseyside. The congregation continues to worship there as part of the United Reformed Church. The building is protected at Grade II*, reflecting its considerable heritage interest.

William and Segar Owen drew up the plans, and construction took place from 1902 until 1904 with funding from William Lever. Created for worshippers of different traditions, it subsequently became Congregational before joining the United Reformed Church. The Gothic Revival exterior combines red sandstone quarried at Helsby with roofing of stone slate, while its form includes a clerestory, transepts and a tower to the south-east. Inside are windows largely produced by Heaton, Butler and Bayne, eight bells cast by Mears and Stainbank in 1904, and a four-keyboard organ made by Henry Willis II. The organ underwent restoration in 2006 and 2007. A memorial at the western end houses the tomb of William and Lady Lever, marked by bronze effigies created by Sir W. Goscombe John.
