About St James' Church, Cooling
St James' Church, Cooling, is a redundant Anglican church on the Hoo Peninsula, around six miles north of Rochester in Kent. Dating from about 1250, it is protected at Grade I and maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust, with support from the Friends of St James’ Church.
Construction began during the 13th century and continued into the 14th, while the tower’s upper stage was finished around 1400. Ragstone, flint and chalk form much of the building, with sandstone used for repairs and tiles covering the roofs. Nineteenth-century work included adding a vestry and reconstructing the porch. Inside are a 13th-century font, several likely 14th-century benches, an 18th-century pulpit and an organ probably made by A. Kirkland around 1880. The vestry is lined with cockle shells, representing Saint James, while the 1897 east window portrays the Ascension. Three 17th-century bells remain, although they cannot be rung.
