About The Unitarian Chapel

The Unitarian Chapel in Northiam, East Sussex, is a former Unitarian place of worship and a Grade II listed building. It remained in religious use into the early 2000s, but had closed and been converted for residential use by 2013. A small burial ground survives beside the former chapel.

The congregation began as a General Baptist community, worshipping in a timber chapel registered in 1795. Influenced by the preacher William Vidler of Battle, it later embraced Universalist and Unitarian beliefs. The wooden structure collapsed during alterations in 1810 and was replaced on the same site by the present brick building. This modest, single-storey chapel has two windows across its south-eastern elevation and reflects the restrained design of rural Unitarian meeting houses. After periods of closure and deterioration, it reopened in 1879 following work that provided new floors, seating, windows and a pulpit.
