About Church of St Laurence, Ramsgate

The Church of St Laurence, Ramsgate, is an active Anglican parish church in Ramsgate, Kent. Sometimes called St Laurence-in-Thanet, it has Grade I listed status and is the town’s earliest surviving church. Its burial ground extends across three and a half acres and holds upwards of 1,400 identified graves, including one from 1656 and a mausoleum belonging to the d’Este family.

Established in 1062, the church initially had an association with an abbey. In 1275 it assumed responsibility for the broader district as its parish church, taking on duties previously connected with Minster. The chancel and flanking aisles date from enlargements undertaken across the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Lightning damaged the building in 1439, prompting substantial reconstruction and the extension of its tower to the height seen today. Following Ramsgate’s expansion, it became an independent parish for St Lawrence village in 1826.
