About Holy Trinity Church, Margate
Holy Trinity Church, Margate is a Church of England place of worship in the Kent coastal town of Margate. Part of the Diocese of Canterbury, the present church occupies a site on St Mary’s Avenue by St Mary’s Chapel, close to Northdown Park in Cliftonville.
The original building was planned after Margate’s population increased and St John’s could no longer provide sufficient space. William Edmunds won a competition involving 24 proposed schemes, and the ceremonial laying of the first stone took place on 28 September 1825. Rising costs delayed consecration until 11 June 1829. On 1 June 1943, an enemy aircraft bombed the chancel, destroying much of the structure and causing ten deaths, four severe injuries and 46 lesser injuries. Although the tower remained almost unscathed, it was taken down in 1958 and 1959. Harold Anderson designed the current church, which was erected between 1957 and 1959.
