About St Nicholas's Church, Otham
St Nicholas’s Church, Otham is a Church of England parish church near Maidstone in Kent. It remains in parish use and is protected at Grade I, reflecting its exceptional historic and architectural importance.
Although the recorded foundation date is 1101, the surviving structure largely began in the later 12th century, with further work during the 13th and 14th centuries. The tower, nave walls and lower part of the chancel are built from irregular stonework and tufa rubble. Fourteenth-century chapels extend along the north side, while the clay-tiled roof has a steep pitch. A square south tower stands between the nave and chancel, with corner buttresses and a weatherboarded timber bell stage added in the 16th century, crowned by an octagonal wooden spire. Nineteenth-century changes included the south porch, west end and chancel roof. Inside is a carved 14th-century font, together with monuments dating from the late 16th to the 18th century.
