About St Michael and All Angels Church, Maidstone

St Michael and All Angels Church, Maidstone is a Church of England parish church in Maidstone, Kent. It remains a place of parish worship and is protected as a Grade II listed building.

Completed in 1876, the church was designed by Arthur Blomfield and built by George Naylor’s firm of Rochester. It served neighbourhoods developing west of the River Medway, including Westborough and Fant, as St Peter’s Church was both too small and inconveniently situated for these growing districts. Although initially planned with a dedication to the Virgin Mary, the church received its present name. Its design combines Early English influences with Decorated Gothic elements. Kentish ragstone forms the main structure, complemented by Bath stone details and roofs covered with red tiles. At the west end stands a castellated tower measuring 74 feet, accompanied by a circular stair turret inspired by a feature commonly found in Kent’s medieval church architecture.
