About St Mary's Church Hunton

St Mary’s Church Hunton is a Church of England parish church on West Street in Hunton, Kent. The church has Grade I listing, recognising its exceptional architectural and historic significance.

Its earliest fabric dates from the late eleventh or twelfth century, with alterations and additions spanning the thirteenth to sixteenth centuries and further work in the nineteenth. Built from irregular ragstone rubble beneath tiled roofs, it was restored by Ewan Christian in 1876. The three-stage western tower dates to the thirteenth century and carries a shingled pyramidal spire. Other features include a fifteenth-century south aisle and nave arcade, medieval traceried windows, a crown-post roof, an octagonal font, and a thirteenth-century double sedile made from Bethersden Marble. Memorials commemorate several local families and Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, Prime Minister from 1905 to 1908 and owner of the nearby Hunton Court estate.
