About St Mary's Church, Burham
St Mary’s Church, Burham is a redundant Anglican church at Halling, near Burham in Kent. Standing beside the Pilgrims’ Way about a kilometre west of Burham, it looks across the River Medway. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building and is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust.
Dating from around 1150, the church was enlarged and altered between the 12th and 15th centuries. It once served a settlement whose inhabitants later relocated to higher land. Former aisles on both sides have been removed, although the sealed arches of the north aisle remain visible outside. Built from rough ragstone masonry beneath tiled roofs, the surviving structure comprises a nave, chancel, south porch and western tower. The three-level tower has a battlemented top and an eight-sided stair turret at its south-west corner. Two Norman fonts survive inside. A restoration was carried out in 1956.
