St George’s is the Church of England parish church for Gravesend, standing on Princes Street near the lower end of the High Street. Part of the Diocese of Rochester, it remains an active place of worship, with services at 10.00 am on Sundays and Wednesdays. The building is protected at Grade II*.
The church was founded in 1497 and rebuilt in 1731. Pocahontas was interred beneath its chancel in March 1617, but the precise location of her grave disappeared during the rebuilding. A bronze statue by William Ordway Partridge now commemorates her. The cemetery is also believed to contain unnamed Jacobite prisoners who died aboard prison ships on the Thames following the Battle of Culloden in 1746, including the Roman Catholic chaplain Alexander Cameron.
