About Faversham Parish Church
Faversham Parish Church, dedicated to St Mary of Charity, is an active Church of England parish church serving Faversham in Kent. Its prominent spire can be seen across the town and from the surrounding area. The building received Grade I listed status in 1950 and is considered one of Kent’s largest churches.
The church is medieval in origin and dates from around 1350. It survives from the religious settlement associated with nearby Faversham Abbey, founded by King Stephen in 1147 and later suppressed under Henry VIII. Its distinctive crown-shaped spire was added during the prosperous 18th century, while Sir George Gilbert Scott substantially restored the interior in 1874. Notable features include a burial place traditionally attributed to King Stephen, significant misericords in the quire, a scarce painted medieval column and an altar honouring Saints Crispin and Crispinian. The clock was made by James William Benson.
