About St Clement's Church, Knowlton
St Clement’s Church, Knowlton is a redundant Anglican church at Knowlton Court near Dover, Kent. Once used as a parish church, it is now a Grade I listed building cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. The surrounding churchyard remains the responsibility of the Knowlton Estate.
Dating from the 14th or 15th century, the church began as Knowlton Court’s private chapel. William White restored it in 1855, when most of its present windows were installed. Built of flint beneath a tiled roof, the simple structure comprises a nave and chancel, with a bellcote at the western end. Inside are 19th-century box pews, a font and reading desks, alongside stained glass made by Lavers, Barraud and Westlake during the 1850s and 1860s. Memorials commemorate families associated with Knowlton Court, including Admiral Sir John Narborough and relatives lost in the 1707 shipwreck near the Isles of Scilly.
