About All Saints Church, Waldershare
All Saints Church, Waldershare is a former Anglican church near Dover in Kent, standing beside the A256 and close to the North Downs Way. This Grade II* listed building is now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust, having ceased regular use in 1980.
Originating in the 12th century, the church has a flint and rubble nave and chancel beneath slate roofing, with red-brick mortuary chapels added around 1697 and 1712. Ewan Christian substantially reconstructed the main body in 1886, followed by further restoration in 1902. Surviving details include a Norman chancel window, Victorian glass, painted sanctuary decoration by Clayton and Bell, and a reredos incorporating mosaic and a marble triptych. The chapels contain important memorials, including the late 17th-century tomb of Susan Bertie and an elaborate four-marble monument to Sir Henry Furnese, surrounded by seated figures of mourning women.
