About St. Nicholas
St. Nicholas is an Anglican and Methodist church on Church Lane in Sturry, near Canterbury, Kent. Standing above the River Stour, it serves a parish that includes Sturry, Fordwich, Westbere and Hersden. The ecumenical partnership brings together Church of England and Methodist worshippers. The church has been protected as a Grade I listed building since 1965.
A church may have occupied the site by about 690, while the present stone building dates from the Norman period, around 1150. Its original plan comprised a rectangular nave, smaller chancel and three-stage western tower. North and south aisles were added around 1200, and the chancel received lancet windows and a sacristy in 1230. Later medieval work included a wider chancel arch, a shingled timber spire, enlargement of the north aisle around 1370 and expansion of the south aisle in 1490. Notable details include decorated stained glass, carved stone faces and a font dating from the late twelfth or early thirteenth century.
