About Church of St Mary Magdalene

The Church of St Mary Magdalene is a Church of England parish church in Bonnington, Kent. Dating from the medieval period, it remains notable for its historic fabric and architectural interest. The building has held Grade I listed status since 1957.

Built around 1150, possibly where an earlier Anglo-Saxon place of worship once stood, the church is constructed from Kentish ragstone. Its west tower was reconstructed during the 13th century, while extensive alterations followed in the 14th and 15th centuries. The broad nave has 14th-century aisles, alongside a chancel, two chapels and a timber north porch. Surviving Norman work includes the south entrance and an earlier doorway surrounding the decorated 15th-century west door. Medieval details include choir stalls with carved poppyhead ends and fragments of 14th-century glass depicting St George fighting the dragon. Following serious storm damage in 1987, the building was fully repaired, and its internal plaster was restored in 2011.
