About St Mary's Church

St Mary’s Church is an Anglican church in Chartham, Canterbury, Kent, serving as a parish within the Diocese of Canterbury. It continues to hold regular services and is protected as a Grade I listed building.

The church was begun in the late 13th century, traditionally in 1285, and completed around 1305. Its 14th-century tower was added later, while George Edmund Street directed a substantial restoration from 1873 to 1875. Built from locally knapped flint with ragstone at the corners, the cruciform structure comprises a nave, chancel, transepts, crossing and tower. Notable elements include medieval scissor-braced timber roofs, finely worked chancel window tracery and stained glass retaining material from about 1294. Among its monuments are the exceptionally early brass commemorating Sir Robert de Septvans and works by Rysbrack and Thomas Scheemakers.
