About Shrine of Our Lady, Bradstowe

The Shrine of Our Lady, Bradstowe is associated with a historic chapel near Broadstairs harbour, at the corner of Albion Street and Alexandra Road. Medieval fabric survives within the later frontage, while the shrine itself is now kept at Holy Trinity Church nearby. The former chapel has served several religious and secular purposes, including use as an Anglican parish room, bookshop and pub.

The chapel may pre-date 1070 and was certainly established by the mid-fourteenth century. Its twin towers guided local mariners, who traditionally lowered their upper sails in greeting as they passed. A blue-glazed lantern once displayed a warning light from the cliff. After a powerful storm damaged the building and destroyed the shrine in the 1520s, shipwright George Culmer reconstructed the chapel and provided a replacement. Another restoration followed around 1601, reusing earlier masonry; an old doorway, window and section of wall remain. The building was rebuilt again in 1825.
