St. Mary’s is an active Church of England parish church in central Dover, Kent. Standing on Cannon Street, it is protected as a Grade II* listed building and has long been associated with the civic life of the town.
The site may have held a Saxon place of worship, built above earlier Roman baths. Surviving Norman work from the early 1100s includes the tower and three arcade bays. After closing during the Dissolution in 1537, the church resumed parish use in 1544 following a request from local residents. Most of the building was reconstructed by J. C. and C. Buckler in 1843–44, adopting an Early English design, while the tower underwent restoration in 1897. Wartime damage destroyed much of the stained glass, and later windows commemorate links with Dover. Eight bells hang in the tower, and the church contains the principal memorial to those who died in the 1987 Herald of Free Enterprise disaster.
