About Christ Church, Ashford

Christ Church, Ashford is a Church of England parish church in Ashford, Kent. It remains in active use and belongs to the Ashford deanery, within the Maidstone archdeaconry and Canterbury diocese. The building has Grade II listed status.

The church dates from 1866–67 and was designed by Hubert Austin after he won an architectural competition in 1864. Created in response to Ashford’s expanding population following the arrival of the South Eastern Railway works, its construction was largely funded by shareholders in the railway company. The vestry was added in 1910. Built of ragstone with Bath stone detailing and slate roofs, it has an aisled nave, clerestory, chancel, south porch and a bell turret near the western end. Lancet windows line the sides, while geometrical tracery appears in the end windows. Inside, circular piers support the arcades, and the organ was made by Bishop and Son in 1897.
