About All Saints’ Church, Boughton Aluph
All Saints’ Church, Boughton Aluph is an active Church of England parish church near Ashford in Kent. It belongs to the United Wye Benefice and remains in regular use for worship. Dating from about 1250, it is protected at Grade I and has hosted the Stour Music Festival each June.
The church was founded by Adulphus on the site of an earlier Saxon building. Its chancel and north-eastern chapel survive from the 1200s, while Sir Thomas Aldon, a courtier to Edward III, oversaw substantial enlargement during the following century. Much of the nave, aisles, transepts and central crossing dates from this work. Flint and rubble form the main walls, with ashlar detailing and brick used for the porches and buttresses. Notable features include the crossing tower, medieval glass, a fourteenth-century wooden screen and a fifteenth-century Trinity wall painting. Restoration took place in 1878, followed by extensive renovation around the turn of the twenty-first century.
