About The Church Of The Holy Cross, Binstead

The Church Of The Holy Cross, Binstead is a Church of England parish church on Church Road, between Binstead village and the coast near Ryde. It remains in use as the local parish church and is protected as a Grade II listed building. Its position away from the present-day village centre may reflect an earlier settlement connected with nearby medieval quarrying.

Parts of the church date from the 11th and 13th centuries, with much of the chancel built in distinctive herringbone stonework. The nave was rebuilt in 1844, while a north aisle was added during an enlargement in 1875. A 1925 bellcote houses a bell from before the Reformation, thought to have originated at the earlier Cistercian Quarr Abbey. After a severe fire in June 1969, the building was repaired and rededicated in February 1971. Lawrence Lee designed replacement stained glass for windows lost in the fire. The church also contains a pipe organ made by Hele & Co around 1897.
