About St John The Baptist
St John The Baptist is a Church of England parish church in Oakfield, Ryde, on the Isle of Wight. It remains in use as a place of worship and is designated Grade II. Its attached hall accommodates activities organised by both the parish and local groups.
James and John Langdon constructed the building in 1842–43 from designs by Thomas Hellyer. Charles Richard Sumner, then Bishop of Winchester, dedicated it on 18 July 1843. Further additions followed as Ryde’s population increased. After another dedication ceremony on 3 December 1870, it gained its own parish, having previously served St Helens as a chapel of ease. A chapel honouring the seventh Lord Calthorpe was created in 1914, and the chancel was expanded forty years later. Within the burial ground are Commonwealth graves for thirteen First World War servicemen and two who died during the Second World War.
