About St Thomas
St Thomas is a Church of England church in Newport on the Isle of Wight. The building is protected at Grade II* in recognition of its particular architectural and historic importance.
The church was purpose-built following the Reformation, when the Roman Catholic Relief Act of 1791 still limited the appearance of Catholic places of worship. Its design therefore avoided the outward characteristics associated with Church of England buildings at that time. It was constructed without a steeple or bell, and its exterior was deliberately plain. The building has been described as the Isle of Wight’s earliest purpose-built Catholic church after the Reformation, and it is also reputed to have been the first of its kind in England.
