About St Michael the Archangel

St Michael the Archangel stands on Church Lane in Newport, Isle of Wight, and serves as an Anglican parish church. The medieval building is designated Grade I. Its historic dedication was no longer known by the twentieth century, so the church received its current dedication in 1964.

Dating to 1070, the tower has masonry approximately five feet in depth. It initially lacked an entrance at ground height and could be reached only by a ladder leading to an elevated doorway. Local inhabitants used it for protection when French raiders approached along Newtown Creek. Much of the remaining fabric belongs to the later thirteenth century. A spire added about 1800 became unsafe and was taken down in 1912. Work undertaken in 1889 reopened the tower arch, formed an entrance on the northern side and renewed the aisle’s eastern window. The interior floor falls gradually towards the east. Two surviving bells were cast in 1807 and 1815.
