About Wick Central Church
Wick Central Church is a Baptist church in Wick, Highland, in the far north of Scotland. This Category B listed building now provides a permanent place of worship for Wick Baptist Church, whose congregation moved there in 1998 after refurbishment.
Christian worship began on the site in 1806. Following the events of 1843, the congregation became Pulteneytown Free Church, later joining the United Free Church in 1900 and the Church of Scotland in 1929. It closed in 1990 after uniting with Pulteneytown and Thrumster Parish Church, and the Baptist congregation purchased the property in 1997. A tower and steeple were added in 1862, with the tower housing a notably powerful bell. The interior formerly contained dark timber pews, a gallery and five stained-glass windows. Renovations replaced the pews with chairs, carpeted the floor, reduced the sanctuary and created rooms for storage, Sunday school activities and smaller gatherings.
